Construction

From a single patio to the whole garden.

Construction is the building side of Family Tree — the patios, decking, brickwork and structures a garden is laid out around. The other side is maintenance: the mowing, hedges and clearance that keep it looking right afterwards.

We’re a family business. Family Tree started in 2013 with two brothers cutting lawns, and the construction work grew from there. Today it runs from small one-off jobs to huge landscaping projects with garden designers.

No project is too big or small for us: a single new patio gets the same attention as a full garden redesign.

What we build

Patio installation, garden structures and decking.

Our construction work, in three groups. Plenty of gardens need more than one — a patio with sleeper beds around it, say, or decking that steps down to a lawn.

Patios

  • Sandstone
  • Limestone
  • Porcelain
  • Pointing

In most gardens the patio is where the table goes and the evenings get spent, so it is worth getting right. We lay all types, in natural sandstone and limestone or in porcelain, and do the pointing that finishes them. Limestone patios are the job our customers mention most in their Google reviews.

Landscaping

  • Sleeper beds
  • Brickwork & blockwork
  • Concrete bases
  • Sheds & summer houses
  • Water features
  • Ponds

The structure that gives a garden its shape: raised sleeper beds, brickwork and blockwork, and the concrete bases that garden buildings stand on — plus the sheds and summer houses themselves. Water features and ponds too.

When a garden needs rethinking rather than adding to, we take on full garden redesigns, and larger landscaping projects alongside garden designers.

Decking

  • Softwood
  • Hardwood
  • Composite

A deck sits happily above uneven or sloping ground where paving would need building up underneath, so it is often the simplest way to get a level space to sit out on. We build all types, in softwood, hardwood and composite.

Materials

Stone, porcelain and timber.

We lay all types of patio and build all types of decking, so the choice is yours. Roughly how the options differ — the right one usually comes down to the style of the house, the budget and how much upkeep you want.

Patios

Sandstone
Natural stone
Warm, varied colours and a textured face. Every slab is a little different, so it reads as natural and relaxed.
Limestone
Natural stone
Usually cooler and more even in tone than sandstone, with a smoother face. The patio our customers mention most in their reviews.
Porcelain
Manufactured
Dense, consistent slabs with a crisp, modern finish. It takes in very little water, so it is easy to keep clean and slow to stain or gather moss.

Decking

Softwood
Timber
Usually pressure-treated pine or spruce. The most economical of the three, and it needs re-treating now and then to stay at its best.
Hardwood
Timber
Denser, slower-grown timber with a longer natural life. Left alone it weathers to a soft silver-grey; oiled, it keeps its colour.
Composite
Wood fibre & plastic
Made to look like timber without the upkeep — no staining or oiling, and no splinters. A wash now and then is about all it asks.

Questions

Common questions.

If yours isn’t here, call or WhatsApp us on 07736 650477.

Sandstone, limestone or porcelain: which is best for a patio?

There isn’t one right answer. It comes down to the house, the look you want and how much upkeep you’re happy with.

Sandstone and limestone are natural stone — sandstone usually warmer and more textured, limestone smoother and more even in tone. Porcelain is manufactured: consistent, dense and easy to keep clean. We lay all three, and we’re happy to talk it through with you.

Is a small job worth your while?

Yes. For us, no project is too big or small — a complete garden makeover is just as important as a hedge cut. On the construction side that means anything from a few sleeper beds or a single patio up to huge landscaping projects with garden designers.

Do you work with garden designers, or can you design it for us?

Both. Some of our biggest landscaping projects have been with garden designers, and we also take on garden redesigns ourselves.

What will it cost, and how do I get a quote?

Every garden is different, so the price depends on the size of the area, the materials and the state of the ground. The quickest way to start is to call or WhatsApp 07736 650477, or to send us the enquiry form.

Which areas do you cover?

Our patch is Oxfordshire and Berkshire, and our base is in Wallingford. If you can’t tell whether that includes you, ask.

Most of what we do is in South Oxfordshire and West Berkshire — Berinsfield, Didcot, Goring, Henley-on-Thames and Benson, as well as Wallingford and the nearby villages.
