The ground
Soft marly chalk · hillwash Head
The British Geological Survey maps Blewbury on West Melbury Marly Chalk: buff, grey and off-white soft marly chalk, alternating with hard grey limestone. Nothing is mapped over it at the centre.
Half a kilometre to the east, Head is mapped over the chalk: rock debris and clayey hillwash that crept down a slope. Everywhere else on that ring it’s chalk with no cover, so expect alkaline ground, possibly heavier where the Head lies.
Planning
Inside the North Wessex Downs · conservation area at the centre
Blewbury sits inside the North Wessex Downs National Landscape (so does almost the whole parish) and the Blewbury Conservation Area covers its centre. Both are designated land: putting an outbuilding beside the house needs planning permission, and permitted development restricts buildings, enclosures and pools more than 20 metres from the house to a combined 10 square metres.
In the conservation area, give the Vale of White Horse District Council six weeks’ notice of tree work, unless the tree is under 75 mm in diameter 1.5 m above the ground. Removing an old boundary fence, wall or gate there might need permission too.
