Harwell

Just west of Didcot, at the edge of our area.

Harwell is on the western edge of where we work, about seven miles from our base and around twenty minutes by road. Didcot lies about two miles east, and Blewbury about three miles to the south-east.

Like Blewbury, it comes under the Vale of White Horse District Council, and the village centre is in the Harwell Conservation Area. In Harwell we do the lot: patios, decking and garden builds, mowing and hedges, fencing and gates.

Harwell gardens: built, kept and fenced.

Patio installation & landscaping in Harwell

Patios · decking · garden builds

Sleeper beds, brickwork, paths, decking and patios, up to a complete makeover of the garden. Like Didcot’s, Harwell’s centre sits on Upper Greensand, a calcareous sandstone and siltstone, with no superficial deposit over it.

Garden maintenance & turf in Harwell

Mowing · hedges · clearance

Hedge-cutting, mowing, weeding and clearing up, ongoing or one-off, and new lawns from turf, from seed or artificial. Soft, marly chalk is mapped within half a kilometre to the south and south-west, and chalky soils, in the RHS’s words, are largely made up of calcium carbonate and very alkaline.

Closeboard · panels · gates

Closeboarding and panels, post and rail, and gates, for both gardens and land. In the Harwell Conservation Area, check before an old fence, wall or gate comes down, as removing one might need permission.

Relayed a patio with new slabs and built some steps. A nice neat job, friendly and tidy workers, completed as scheduled. Would certainly use again. Responsiveness, Quality, Professionalism

A phenomenal job done clearing a severely overgrown and neglected garden. Quick, thorough, friendly no-fuss service. 100% recommend

The team came so quickly when I couldn’t find anyone else and they did a fantastic job. The whole job was done before I even got back from the school run and they left nothing behind! Just a beautifully trimmed wisteria Thanks so much

Good to know

Greensand at the centre, chalk to the south.

The ground

Upper Greensand · West Melbury Marly Chalk

Upper Greensand underlies Harwell’s centre, with nothing mapped over it: in British Geological Survey terms, fine-grained sand and sandstone with silt. The greensand continues for half a kilometre in most directions.

The exception is the south and south-west, where West Melbury Marly Chalk comes in, soft and marly in the BGS’s own words. Expect alkaline soil on the chalk; chalky soils range from light to heavy, according to the RHS.

Planning

Harwell Conservation Area · 40% of the parish in the Downs

The village centre is in the Harwell Conservation Area, where the council needs six weeks’ notice before tree work (trees below 75 mm in diameter at 1.5 m don’t count) and removing a fence, wall or gate may need permission. Because a conservation area counts as designated land, any outbuilding to the side of a house needs planning permission there too.

Harwell’s centre is about 0.6 km outside the North Wessex Downs National Landscape; even so, around 40% of the parish lies within it. At those addresses, the 10-square-metre limit applies to outbuildings more than 20 metres from the house.

Questions

Questions from Harwell.

If yours isn’t here, call or WhatsApp us on 07736 650477.

Do you cover Harwell?

Yes — Harwell is at the western edge of where we work, about seven miles from Wallingford and around twenty minutes by road. Message or call us on 07736 650477 to get things moving.

Which council looks after planning in Harwell?

The Vale of White Horse District Council, which also covers Blewbury. Didcot, about two miles east, comes under South Oxfordshire District Council instead.

Does the North Wessex Downs reach Harwell?

Partly. The village centre is about 0.6 km outside the National Landscape, but about 40% of Harwell parish is inside. If your address is, an outbuilding at the side of the house can’t go up without planning permission, and ones more than 20 metres from it are capped at 10 square metres in total.

What about Rowstock and Sutton Courtenay?

Both are covered, and so is West Hagbourne. Rowstock, West Hagbourne and Sutton Courtenay sit alongside Didcot, Blewbury, Dorchester-on-Thames and Berinsfield on our list.
