The ground
Gravel cap · Lambeth Group clays · chalk
Binfield Heath is mapped on Winter Hill Gravel lying over the Lambeth Group’s clays, silts and sands. Within half a kilometre the gravel continues to the north, south-west, west and north-west.
To the east, south-east and south the gravel gives out and the Lambeth Group is at the surface; to the north-east it’s chalk. Off the gravel, expect heavier soil: the RHS says clay drains slowly and bakes hard in summer, often cracking noticeably.
Planning
Chilterns (most of the parish) · no conservation area
The edge of the Chilterns National Landscape runs about 70 metres from the village’s mapped centre, and about 68% of Binfield Heath parish lies inside it, so find out which side of the line your address is on before planning a garden building. If you’re inside, side outbuildings need planning permission, and those more than 20 metres from the house may total 10 square metres at most.
South Oxfordshire’s list of conservation areas has no Binfield Heath entry, and the nearest is more than a kilometre from the centre. In a front garden, paving more than five square metres in area needs planning permission unless it’s permeable or drains to a lawn or border; these allowances apply to houses, not flats.
