Fencing

From a single gate to the whole boundary.

Fencing is one of the three sides of Family Tree, alongside construction and maintenance. We put up closeboarding, panels, gates and post and rail, and our fencing work is agricultural and private.

We’re a family business. Family Tree started in 2013 with two brothers cutting lawns, and has grown since then into the construction and fencing work we take on today, for a base of loyal clients across Oxfordshire and Berkshire.

No project is too big or small for us: one new gate gets the same care as a boundary the length of a field.

What we put up

Closeboarding, panels, gates, and post and rail.

The four kinds of fencing we do. Roughly how each one is built and where it tends to suit — the right one comes down to what the fence is for, the ground it stands on and the look you’re after.

  1. Closeboard

    Solid · Private

Feather-edge boards, overlapped and fixed upright to rails between the posts. Built on site board by board, it can follow the lie of the land, and it makes a solid, private boundary.

  2. Panels

    Ready-made

Pre-made panels fixed between posts, in a range of styles. The straightforward way to a neat, even boundary on level ground — and a damaged panel can be changed on its own.

  3. Gates

    Access

The one part of a boundary that moves, and the part that gets used every day, so it has to hang true on its posts and shut cleanly.

  4. Post and rail

    Open · Rural

Stout posts with two or three horizontal rails and open space between. It marks a line without hiding the view, which is why it’s the traditional choice for fields, paddocks and larger plots.

Who it’s for

From back gardens to open fields.

Our fencing is agricultural and private — two quite different kinds of job.

Private
Homes & gardens
Back and side boundaries, front gardens and side returns. Mostly about privacy, keeping children and dogs in, and giving the garden a clean edge to sit inside.
Agricultural
Land & fields
Field boundaries and paddocks, where the runs are long and the fence has a practical job: marking the line and keeping animals where they belong.

Questions

Common fencing questions.

If yours isn’t here, call or WhatsApp us on 07736 650477.

Which type of fence is right for us?

It depends what the fence is for. For privacy around a garden, closeboard and panels are the usual choices: closeboard for a long, sloping or exposed boundary, panels where the ground is level and a ready-made finish suits.

Post and rail marks a boundary without closing it in. We’d love to talk it through with you.

Do you put up gates as well?

Yes. Gates are part of our fencing work, alongside closeboarding, panels and post and rail.

Do you fence farmland, or just gardens?

Both. Our fencing is agricultural and private, so it runs from a garden boundary to fencing across open land.

Do we need planning permission, or the neighbours’ agreement?

For an ordinary garden fence, usually not planning permission. In England, fencing no taller than 2 metres generally counts as permitted development — or 1 metre, where it runs beside a road. The usual exceptions are listed buildings and homes where those rights have been removed — some new-build estates, for example. If in doubt, ask the council’s planning team before any work starts.

The neighbours are a separate matter. Your deeds may say who is responsible for each boundary, and it’s always worth a word with next door before an old fence comes down or a new one goes up.

What will it cost, and how do I get a quote?

The price depends on the length and height of the run, the type of fence, the ground and what’s there already. For the quickest price, ring or WhatsApp 07736 650477 — or fill in our enquiry form.

Which areas do you cover?

We put up fencing right across Oxfordshire and Berkshire. Not sure your address is close enough? Ask us.

Most jobs, though, are in South Oxfordshire and West Berkshire, around Wallingford, where we’re based: Goring, Henley-on-Thames, Benson, Didcot, Berinsfield and their surrounding villages.
