Maintenance

Where Family Tree began.

In 2013 two brothers started Family Tree by cutting lawns. Since then the business has grown into landscaping, patios and fencing, and the maintenance is still here: the mowing, hedges, weeding and clearance that keep a garden in good order.

Our young, enthusiastic team gets a kick out of transforming outdoor spaces, big or small — and that includes the garden that only needs its hedge brought back into line.

New lawns sit on this side of the business too: turfing, seeding and artificial grass.

What we do

Maintenance, hedges, clearance and lawns.

Our maintenance work, in four groups. Most gardens need a mix of them — a regular mow and the odd hedge cut, say, or a clearance followed by a new lawn.

Mowing and borders

  • Mowing
  • Weeding
  • Bedwork
  • Planting

The everyday work that keeps a garden looking cared for: the lawn cut, the beds weeded and worked over, and new planting where the borders need it. Kept up, it stops small jobs turning into big ones — a border that is weeded often rarely needs clearing.

Planting works as a one-off job too: a new border filled, or a gap where something has died back.

Hedges

  • Hedge-cutting

A hedge is often the first thing anyone sees of a house from the road, and one that has lost its shape makes the whole garden look untended. A good cut puts that right.

We cut hedges as a one-off job or as part of regular maintenance.

Clearance and clean-ups

  • Garden clearance
  • Leaf clearance
  • Woodland clearance
  • Gutter clearance
  • Power washing

For the garden that has got away from someone, after a house move or a few years left to itself: the growth cut back, the beds cleared and the paths found again. There’s one of ours, before and after, further down.

And the clean-ups that come round every year: leaves cleared from lawns and beds, woodland clearance where scrub and saplings have closed in, gutters emptied, and power washing for the moss and grime that build up outdoors over a winter.

Turf installation and new lawns

  • Turfing
  • Seeding
  • Artificial grass

A new lawn, three ways. Turf gives you a finished lawn the day it’s laid. Seed takes longer to establish. Artificial grass stays green all year and never needs mowing.

Which one suits depends on the garden, how soon you want to use it and how much upkeep you’re after. We do all three, and can talk you through the differences for your garden.

Regular or one-off

A gardener for hire, regular or one-off.

We take on both, from regular maintenance contracts to smaller one-off jobs such as planting and clearance.

On contract

Regular maintenance

The garden kept on top of, visit after visit, so it never gets away from you: the lawn mown, the beds weeded, hedges kept to shape and leaves cleared as the year comes round. It keeps a garden looking right without taking over your weekends.

Over the years we’ve built up a base of loyal clients across Oxfordshire and Berkshire.

One-off jobs

One job, done properly: a hedge brought back into shape, an overgrown garden cleared, gutters emptied, a patio power washed, a border planted up. Useful before a house goes on the market or a party in the garden, or just to get it back to a point where it’s easy to keep.

No project is too big or small for us — a complete garden makeover is just as important to us as a hedge cut.

Through the year

What a garden needs, season by season.

Garden maintenance isn’t the same job in January as it is in June. Roughly how the work falls across a year, and which of our jobs goes with each season.

  1. March – May

    Spring

The garden wakes up. The grass starts growing again and so do the weeds, so the first cuts of the year go in and the beds are cleared and worked over, ready for planting.

    • Mowing
    • Weeding
    • Bedwork
    • Seeding
    • Power washing
  2. June – August

    Summer

Everything at full growth. The lawn needs cutting more often than at any other time of year, and late summer, once nesting birds have moved on, is when many hedges have their main trim.

    • Mowing
    • Hedge-cutting
    • Weeding
    • Bedwork
  3. September – November

    Autumn

The leaves come down on lawns, beds and gutters. With the soil still warm and the rain back, it’s also a good time to lay turf, sow seed and plant.

    • Leaf clearance
    • Gutter clearance
    • Turfing
    • Seeding
    • Planting
  4. December – February

    Winter

The garden goes quiet, which makes it the season for the heavier work: overgrown ground and scrub cleared back before the birds start nesting again in spring.

    • Garden clearance
    • Woodland clearance
    • Gutter clearance

One of our clearances.

Questions

Garden maintenance questions.

Anything else, call or WhatsApp us on 07736 650477.

Do you do one-off jobs, or only regular contracts?

Both. Our work runs from regular maintenance contracts to smaller one-off jobs such as planting and clearance.

When is the best time to cut a hedge?

For most garden hedges the main trim falls between late spring and late summer, and fast growers such as privet or leylandii can need cutting more than once a year to stay tidy.

Wild birds’ nests are protected by law while they’re in use, so during the nesting season — roughly March to August — a hedge needs checking before it’s cut.

Can you take on a garden that’s badly overgrown?

Yes. Clearance is part of what we do, from garden and leaf clearance up to woodland clearance. The brick path further up this page was one: lost under long grass, then cut back and cleared.

Turf, seed or artificial grass: which is best?

It depends what you want from the lawn, and how soon. Turf gives you a finished lawn straight away, though it needs watering in and a few weeks to root before heavy use. Seed takes longer to establish, and is usually sown in spring or early autumn. Artificial grass needs no mowing and stays green all year, but it isn’t a living lawn.

We do all three.

What does garden maintenance cost?

It comes down to the size of the garden, what needs doing and, for a regular contract, how often we come. Call or WhatsApp 07736 650477 with a rough idea of the garden, or send us the enquiry form.

Which areas do you cover?

Oxfordshire and Berkshire. If you’re near the edge of that and not sure, ring and ask.

The greater part of our work is in South Oxfordshire and West Berkshire, centred on our Wallingford base: Benson, Goring, Didcot, Henley-on-Thames, Berinsfield and the villages round them.
