The ground
Chalk · river gravel towards the Thames
Goring is mapped on chalk, with no superficial deposit mapped at the centre. River sand and gravel is mapped within half a kilometre towards the Thames, which is less than a kilometre to the west.
The RHS describes chalky soils as very alkaline, and many are shallow and free-draining. Expect borders that can dry out in summer, and lime-tolerant plants to do best.
Planning
Chilterns National Landscape · Goring Conservation Area nearby
Goring is inside the Chilterns National Landscape — nearly all of the parish is. That counts as designated land, so planning permission is needed for any outbuilding placed beside the house, and beyond 20 metres from the house, garden buildings can cover no more than 10 square metres altogether without permission.
The Goring Conservation Area boundary is about 100 metres from the village’s mapped centre. Inside it, tree work needs six weeks’ notice to the council (saplings under 75 mm in diameter, measured 1.5 m up, don’t count), and taking down a fence, wall or gate may need permission.
